I think about Photography all the time... I am a full time photography teacher as well as a portrait photographer. Lately I have been trying to find the common denominator with all "amazing" photographers. You know... those ones that when you see an image by them, and you just know who took it. Like, Ansel Adams, Sue Bryce, Amanda Holloway, Rachel VanOven, etc... I have come to the conclusion that all of these talented photographers have one main thing in common, they specialize in ONE thing. Ansel Adams is a legendary landscape photographer, Sue Bryce has glamour, Amanda Holloway has seniors, and Rachel VanOven is the queen of babies. =)
I absolutely love love love every single genre of portraits that I do. However, there is one that I am head over heels for. Seniors. I teach them full time Monday-Friday at my "real" job, and I love their personalities, their individualism, I love that they are on the verge of the rest of their lives. Their senior portraits are usually the last time they will be photographed professionally until their wedding day. It is an amazing experience being able to sit down to coffee with them and their parents and hear how they want to portray who they are in their senior portraits. I love helping them plan their clothing choices and make up. It is all fantastic.
It hurts me to limit my other sessions, but I have made the hard, but incredible decision to specialize in High School Senior Portraits. I hope that limiting my range of portraits will help me focus my energy and attention on one genre, and help me hone my skills to one day become one of those "amazing" photographers that I love to stalk on Instagram and Facebook. I will continue to do some children photography, each month on a limited basis. I have decided at this time I will no longer take on weddings, events, or newborns. I hope this announcement does not offend anyone, and that every one of my past and future clients can see that I must follow my passion in order to flourish.
